When replacing the oil filter, I noticed that the connector, which contains the pressure relief valve, was very undone, by about 3 or 4 turns. Nothing to worry about I suppose and it could have been like that, or gradually undoing at each of the last several changes, but something I'll be checking each time a new filter goes on. I do recall a filter coming sufficiently undone a long time ago to piss over the tyre, which might not be unconnected.

This 20,000 miler has always consumed a bit oil, but I don't think it's got significantly worse. I do check reasonably often (cursing the stupid dipstick each time) and I'm not that bothered about overfilling. As others have found, if I have let the level drop a bit, the fan will come on more, thus reminding you to get on your knees again and peer at that stupid bit of black plastic. Why didn't they use a window?

Because windows cost money......and it's not a relief valve, it's a check valve.
