Hello all, Got an unusual question for you, what type of welds are on a tuber frame, TIG, MIG, other ? Been thinking lately about nickel plating the frame next time the bike comes apart, the answer to the above question will be the decider. Thanks |

It's MIG welded. Tig is a much neater weld ( if you can weld ) though you can smooth any blobs away where the wire leaves the metal at the end of the weld with a flapper disc. I did this before I had my S1 frame powder coated after tig welding the missing spar in

Graham. If you want the nickel look this can be achieved with a powder coat. I met a guy at Em's day about three years back from the Yarmouth area on a S1 w/l and I actually asked where he'd had the frame nickel plated. I was taken aback when he replied it was powder coated. | My brother had an oil tank on an old BSA done in that finish, really quite impressive. |

Have seen the chrome PC in pictures before and had already earmarked for a few bits, will keep it in mind for the frame when the time comes. Years back, had a couple of friends who rode nickel plated Spondon and Moto Martin framed bikes, was always very jealous and promised myself 'one day'. Not sure what I'll do now nickel is off the table. |

I've had a couple of bikes with Nickle plated frames, a Featherbed and a Mettisse. Both were a nightmare to live with and needed constant polishing to keep corrosion free, especially in nooks and crannies such as behind gussets etc. Apparently, Nickle does doesn't like to 'throw' itself, for want of a better term, into restricted areas during electroplating, so it can be a bit thin in these areas. |

Sounds like a nickel plated frame should remain just a good idea. Probably the biggest job on a bike, only plan on doing it once |
