Hello All,

Thanks to the great support on this forum I now have my XB back on the road. Took it out yesterday for a short test ride and everything felt good. I felt the engine was a little rough in places and it smelt rich at times.

I thought I would perform a TPS reset and see if things improved.

So, using ECM Spy I connected it to my XB and carried out the steps are shown in the software....

I started the bike up and it seemed to idle fine for 20 seconds or so then started to cut out. I started it a few more times and tried to ride off. There were a few very loud backfires and the bike cut out. It struggled to idle.

I adjusted the idle screw a little so the bike would actually run properly and I managed to ride it around the block. The bike seems very loud, it has no power and sounds like a sit on lawn mower. I got the back back home and adjusted the idle to around 1,100rpm.

The bike engine does not sound right. Still sounds like a lawnmower. It's hard to explain.

I tried to connect the ECMspy software back to the bike but it continually times out.

So now I'm stuck with a bike that doesn't run properly and I can't connect back to the ECM to diagnose the issue.

Any ideas or advice?

Cheers

Erm, that's a tough one. I'd say drop round on it, but you are some way away.

Did you save your EEPROM before the TPS reset?

Can you connect to ECMSpy with the engine running?

Yeah a right headache.

Yes I saved the EEPROM straight away. That's backed up and saved if needed later.

I haven't tried with the engine running.

I've had a few hours to think about it now. The last time I sounded like a "Lawnmower" was when I first rescued the bike from Scotland and it was running on one cylinder. I wonder if the rough low idle followed by the backfiring after the TPS reset had knocked one of the new HT leads off the plug?

I'll check tomorrow. I hope it's something that simple!

This bike certainly has character, I'll give it that much!

Too much stop starting, short run around the block and not getting the engine up to true running temp , can foul a plug very easy :old:

Right.

Had a visual check of the HT leads and everything looks in place. ECM spy still times out and asks if the ignition is on etc even with the engine running! and times out.

I can confirm it's only running on the rear cylinder. The front exhaust pipe doesn't heat up. :headbang:

Guess I am going to try re-seating the HT leads and check the front spark plug out as the next step.

I'm still concerned that the ECU is not responsive.

Making progress. Removed the front plug. I'm not experienced in these things but it appeared pretty fouled. I cleaned it up the best I could and put it back in.

The bike is now back running on two cylinders. Although the idle was initially high at over 2k rpm.
I adjusted the idle down a bit and then went for a ride to warm the engine up. I then adjusted the idle down to just over 1k. It still sounds a bit weird to my ears but both pipes are getting hot, and the bike has its power back.

I'm just going to shoot out and give it a bit of an Italian tune and see how things go from there.

Ok so. Italian tune completed. Everything seemed normal except the idle was less choppy and poppy. It's hard to describe but it sounded different. Got it back home. Tried ECMspy again and it said the cable was faulty. After a bit of jigging it connected and I saw live data!!! :o I quickly adjusted the idle value and now it jumps between 1000 and just over 1150. The bike has started to sound more "characterful" at idle now.

So Happy days for now until I try to do something else and brake it
