Hello All,

Don't know whether I'm interpreting the service manual incorrectly here.

I've noted in the service manual for installation of both front and back brakes that I need to install new parts. Specifically for the front brake, 6 new rotar mounting fastners, springs, washers and drive bushings.

Is this strictly necessary when I'm putting the same disc back on the bike? The parts look in good order apart from being dirty.

Just looking to try and cut out any unnecessary expense.

I am sure Buell are covering themselves in case there is a failure and they get a huge claim against them.

Your life depends on your brakes. You should be able to judge if parts need replacing.

I haven't used new stuff when servicing my brakes unless the parts look past their best.

Brake mountings are what I call "mission critical" parts.

If a disc is removed from the wheel, I will always use new mounting bolts - the chances of the old bolts failing if reused might be slim, but the consequences are not nice.

The springs and other mounting gear I might take a view on - as I understand it they have not been subject to quite the same sort of tension as the bolts themselves.

Never replaced them on any of the hundreds of cars and bikes I've worked on. (unless obviously damaged)

TTY (stretch) bolts get replaced every time - standard high tensile, nope.

Will you die a horrible death if a disc bolt snaps?... bet you wouldn't even notice.

Let me know if you find a good source for imperial threaded hi-tensile shouldered button head bolts.

This Winter I had the wheels powder coated on my 06 Ully. Removing the fasteners resulted in three being damaged so I replaced all eighteen. with regards the springs behind the front disc, two were stuck in the wheel in a compressed state so they had to be forced out. I replaced the six springs. The spacers I used again. Will be back on the road next month.

I have ordered my spare parts from Twin Motorcycles in the Netherlands. I'm collecting the package tomorrow and hopefully getting the bike back on the road tomorrow.

I was initially going to replace all the bits and pieces for the front disc as I read in the service manual, but I have decided to save myself £130 as the existing parts look in good order and it seems my view that they should be ok is supported to some extent.

I am replacing all the bolts for the rear disc as they were all rusted and one of the heads were damaged on removal.
I haven't replaced the bolts on the sprocket either.
