Hello All,

I have a 2006 XB12S which I am restoring in my spare time as a amateur home mechanic.

I've just had my wheels powder coated and I am fitting new wheels bearings. I have just finished fitting the bearings into the front wheel. When I look with the naked eye they appear flush with the wheel. When I feel with my finger I can feel they're a fraction out.

I was expecting the wheel spacer to be tight up against the bearings, but I am able to move it with my finger.

Is this normal and will tighten itself up once It's all torqued back together on the bike? Or do I need to try more percussion?

Cheers,

Ted

No, sounds like somebody has crushed the spacer for you... Time for a new one...

Your bearings will wear out very quickly with a crushed spacer...

Thanks Pash.

I've put the bearings in the rear wheel. Seems snug against the spacer. When I turn the bearing the spacer turns.

I took the wheels to a local motorcycle mechanic to remove the bearings and a stuck bolt for me as I didn't have the right tools. I don't recall the spacer looking damaged or squashed, but i suppose it only needs to be out by a fraction!

Might take another look at it and double check my work before undoing it all! Nothing worse than having to undo work you've spend considerable hours on!

Cheers

Way to go is put the disc side bearing up against the shoulder, then the spacer, then the drive side up against the spacer. The spacer should separate the bearings, not the shoulders...

Nah they didn't. Made sure they taped it off.

Plan of action is to take the bearings back out and check the hub for any debris that may stop it from going all the way in. Then try the whole process again. If it still doesn't sit right then I'll have to start looking for a new spacer!

Well. there was a little debris in the hub ( a few flakes of paint and dust) which I cleaned out and tried again. Bearings went in very easy, but they still don't nip the spacer up. There's literally the width of a hair in it. so frustrating.

I inspected the spacer and it doesn't seem distorted or damaged.

Looks like I've damaged one of the bearing covers in the process of putting it back in. argh. Guess I got frustrated.

So, time for a new spacer and new bearing!!

Playing devils advocate. The spacer may not be lost? I do allow some tight movement of my spacers against the inner bearing race before torquing up the wheels. After pressing in the disc side bearing (lubing the bearing recess with copper grease) l push in the 2nd bearing until the spacer still just moves with firm finger pressure. It will still have to centre up when the spindle goes in. Then l turn the wheel with my fingers inside the bearing and spacer to check that the spacer has even pressure against the bearing all round. Then l make any fine adjustments with only a light tap on the 2nd bearing so it all feels just tight enough but no more.

Obsessive yes, but l do get lots of miles from wheel bearings. Still on 4th set from New at 43k. ;)
