Came back from a ride earlier and noticed a bolt had fallen out of the (hateful live to ride) timing cover - can't blame the bike for trying to shed the embarassment but what thread are the bolts, look about 4mm to my metric brain.

The standard cover is riveted on, so I guess it depends on what thread tap was used :?:

Take the other out and match it up (I think it will be a self tapper)...

Sure it's the timing cover? Those Live to ride thingies are usually the clutch cover.
IIRC, the threads are UNC, definitely not Metric.
I can't get to my Bat Cave right now, otherwise I could tell you for sure.

Unfortunately they're both, and you can even buy both together :ill:

It's the timing cover.

It's not 1/4 - it might be 3/16 or possibly 8-32, I've brought the one remaining bolt into work this morning to match it up or measure with a pitch gauge.

It's 8-32.

I've just knocked up a jig for turning new timing covers from plate.

Does the original one have an o ring seal around it, it looks like a recess for a seal in the engine case but there's a (much too big) hole in the bottom of the case for the wiring that pretty much makes any seal completely pointless.

Sounds like you're sorted ;)
Mine had two pates a plain one with countersunk screws behind the badged one, which was rivited to the first.
I didn't seal it.
My mate engraves electrical panels for yachts, and he had some carbon fiber off cuts.
So I got him to knock me one out with Thor's hammer engraved into it. :)

You can tell things are going to the dogs around here when Thor's hammer is mentioned in the technical section lOl
