Dear Buell people!!

Having a bit of a starting issue with my 2007 XB12X thingy.

For a while now (end of last year and into this) if I didn't have the battery fully charged I got a clicking from the starter and struggling to turn the engine over. It helped if I left the charger connected to start the bike initially. If I was out for a run, usually fine. I just thought good slug of charge from the alternator and warm engine meant the battery could then cope.

As the battery is original, and the symptoms so far, I assumed the battery was getting toward being buggered rather than anything else, so ordered and fitted a new Motobatt glass mat impregnated thing, as had heard/read good reviews.

The problem with starting is exactly the same as before, possibly worse with the new battery fitted, aaargh!

Could the fault be with the starter motor and the battery is actually fine?

Is there a possibility of it just being the starter motor clutch, if so are they rebuildable?

If it is the starter motor how much and what is the best source?

Many thanks

Pat

What happens if you put a jump lead from the battery -ve to the engine?

Might be worth checking that hateful connector 77 down under the pulley cover hasn't melted and stopping your battery charging from the engine?

Do you get the full 14.2 volts at the battery with the engine running?

Worth a quick check anyway.

Good luck, Mark.

Absolutely!

BTW for Nick and Mark:
Jump lead from battery -ve to engine itself, no difference.
14.2V at battery terminals with engine running.

Try voltage drop from battery + to starter motor + should show zero volts then battery - to starter body should show zero volts this is done while cracking it's more accurate than checking the resistance!
