Hi to all
My 09 1125R battery was pig flat lastnight
Tried to bump start it (couldn't get it to go over the first compression so I gave up).
I charged it for half an hour to get it to swing the engine over. I was melting in my leathers trying to bump start it, but it was the first available opportunity this year to ride out with some 'Keen' motorcyclists.
Half an hours ride to the meeting point saw no improvement.
I killed the engine and tried to re-start it while rolling at speed but had to bump it back into life. It wouldn't turn over at all.
I had to head straight back home as a fuel stop would stuff me.
The ride home saw an improvement in battery voltage as, once home it started on the key (but weak) and the battery light was staying off at tick over.
I'm sure it's just the battery, so I've left it on charge over night

Q. What should the battery voltage be in a fully charged state?
(I have 12.9V this morning)

The battery must be the wrong one as it's lying on it's back with the terminals facing up
The live terminal is on the right, and only 35mm(max)from the box crossmember that the seat pod metal tongue hooks under.
I've been Extra careful not to short out the terminal when removing/ refitting the seat pod.

Q. Are bike battery's like car battery's in so much as; is there is a number that corresponds with the physical dimensions and relative terminal position??

Q. Is there a battery clamp when original battery configuration is used?

Q. Is anyone using NmHd battery?

I would appreciate your thoughts please regarding choice of replacement, and the other questions raised.
Thanks

I use a Li-ion battery on my speed triple which is very sensitve to reduced voltage. It has 240 cca for the same size casing which spins it up a treat. The origional had a 200 cca rating. And it only weighs 1.1kg which is a bonus as a speed triple battery is in an appalling place on the bike. No problems up to now to report :yup:

Thanks mate
While I was just in the garage I did the earth and voltage checks on the stater
All good - no earth leakage and 20Vplus at tick over on all legs
- 50v plus at 3000rpm.
I also bypassed the HD loom fix
Battery charge voltage has gone from 12.8 to 13.8 V
Recon the battery is on it's last legs as the running/ Charge voltage should be 14.1V?
My pals have said they'll make me look stupid tomorrow night instead
Now just got to apply for another 'Night Pass' from the War Dept.
Recon I should get it, as it was her that unplugged the optimiser
in the first place.
By the way I have the Oil Jet up-grade Rotor which I did late last summer shortly after buying the bike
It was a preemptive strike where I found the stator starting to Crisp-up
So changed the both rather than tak the chance, as I was off to Italy.
Had no issues while away (2600 miles) so I'm very pleased there is no tale of Woe after doing the checks
Cheers buddy

1. LFX18L1-BS12 5.83x4.13x2.6", weight 2.19 lbs, price $154
2. LFX21L6-BS12 5.83x5.51x3.23", weight 3.03 lbs, price $187

Uk Carrot Cycles can supply option 2.at a cost of £207 delivered.
It's going to need a dedicated charger so add another £80 minimum is my guess.
Mmm, that's going to take a bit of swallowing.
Thanks for the help

MOTOBATT MBYZ16H HIGH POWER AGM MOTORCYCLE BATTERY (GYZ16H) 20% EXTRA POWER

On EBay £56.99

Screw connectors so dead easy to fit and no size issues. All the RSV owners use these to avoid a knackered sprag.

Do I need a special charger for the gel type battery or can I continue to use the otimizer?

A normal charger/optimizer is fine for a gel battery. You'd need a specific charger for a Li-ion battery and they don't like optimizer/ conditioners at all.

However, if you allow a Lithium battery to discharge too much, their dedicated charger won't recognise the cell as a battery. You then have to use a lead acid charger to bring up the charge until the dedicated charger 'sees' it as a battery. The importer for Shorai claim you can use a lead acid/AGM type charger but state that the problem on Li batteries without a cell balancing circuit ie cheaper makes, may charge up 'unbalanced' and this causes excess heat.
Increased CCA is kinder to your sprag clutch.
