Hi guys.

I have owned my Buell X1 Lightning ( Millenium Limited Edition with S3 Thunderbolt tank, altered seat, race ECU, Scorpion stainless race exhaust system, Blue Streak paintwork, polished alloy parts, Racewinder air cleaner and hand made "ace" handlebars ) from new in 2000.

The rubber isolater which supports the end of the Scorpion stainless muffler under the rear of the chaincase broke today whilst I was riding the bike and the first thing I knew about it was when the exhaust note changed and I heard the rear of the muffler dragging on the tarmac under the bike.

The stainless steel tubular part that attaches to the outlet of the standard exhaust header and connects it to the stainless muffer had, consequently, fractured almost all the way around its circumference under the strain and I managed to limp home after having tied the muffler in place.

Can anyone tell me where I can obtain a replacement for this broken stainless connecting pipe please? I should be able to pick up a replacement isolator from any decent auto centre.

try scorpion ...when mine fractured a few years ago they replaced it free of charge.

Thanks. I emailed Scorpion last night but have yet to hear from them. Maybe a phone call would be in order?

What a great company Scorpion Exhausts are!

I spoke to them today and they stated that they offer a lifetime guarantee on their products for the benefit of the original purchaser and, so long as I can demonstrate that I qualify in this regard, they will either repair my broken part or manufacture a new one for me even though they no longer have their original jigs.

I was once told the same by another exhaust company Quill - I soon found out the truth when the pipe fell apart, but if Scorpion are a stand up company then go for it only time will tell.

Did that tank fit straight on? Why did you change?

I've got one of those tanks for muffin ....just never got around to fitting it ;-) ....my reason was to get rid of the tank infills and the extra capacity .

No......rear mount is different and seat interface would require a 're-model', also the frame rails that the tank sits on dont match exactly.

To answer the questions posted regarding the S3 Thunderbolt tank fitted to my X1.

Although outwardly identical to the Cyclone tank, the S3 Thunderbolt is, like the X1 Lightning, fuel injected and it's tank is made to take the integral fuel pump.

The male "hold down" projection at the front of the S3 tank slips perfectly into the female retainer just behind the headstock of the X1 frame and supporting the tank properly only requires a few rubber spacers ( new S3 parts ) on the frame rails either side of the front cylinder plus a standard S3 rubber isolator in the rear "tongue" of the tank where it is clamped down to the frame in front of the seat.

I had to modify the steel bracket ( designed to hold down the rear of the black X1 fuel cell ) that secures the rear of the S3 tank and I then cut the front 3" off the moulded plastic seat base before remoddeling it ( slightly longer than the bit that I had cut off ) in fibreglass to fit the entirely different shape of the rear of the S3 tank and I then had it professionally re-foamed and re-covered in perforated black PVC.

I went to all this trouble because the result is neater than fitting aftermarket infill pieces to the side skirts of the X1 fuell cell cover as required when removing the bulbous X1 side scoops and the S3 tank is of slightly greater capacity ( an extra 3 litres ) than that of the X1.

Yes and no - Not all S3's are FI. In fact I'd guess the majority are not. Mine most certainly is not.

Hi Chris ( Madrid ).

That's an interesting comment about your S3 not being fuel injected.

My copy of the 1999 Buell brochure covering the M2 Cyclone, S3 Thunderbolt and X1 lightning ( which had just replaced the ( carburated?? ) S1 Lightning shows the M2 as being carburated and the S3 and X1 having identical DDFI engines. I'm assuming, therefore, that pre-1999 S3s were carburated and had the same "skinny tailed" fuel tank as the M2 and S1?
