I have an '09 1125CR, which recently (the last 3 or 4 times) the instrument panel has turned off as I get on the bike. I turn the bike on (on side stand), heats up for a minute or so, then when I move the bike upright, just before getting on, the panel will turn off (engine still runs though) and then back on again after a second or so. I can't replicate it again until the next time I ride it (so engine has cooled down again).

So it seems to be the action of turning the bars and moving the bike, only while cold, that causes it to lose power or something. I thought it would be a connection and checked it all, but it would probably happen every time then, and not just the once after turning it on.

Could this be a tilt sensor problem, or something else I'm unaware of? :?

have you tried starting it as you normally do
then try wiggling the wiring loom under the clocks
to see if you can replicate the fault

some Buell's can be a bit tight with cable lengths & routing
so it could be a broken cable inside the cables insulation.

have you put a different set of bars on ?
as this can be the route cause as well :?:

I'll give that a go tomorrow when its cold. I haven't changed the bars or anything up front.

I have changed the tail to a Lightning tail though, but the problem only seems to show when the front is moved - as I originally thought it was happening when I sat down, but further occurrences ruled that out.

Well, I didn't want it, and you didn't want it, otherwise you would've saved it. I'm not going to look after rubbish for someone else!

You didn't consider its feelings and now look what's happening...

Well, he was full of hot air.

Anyhoo, I wiggled the instruments and it's wire behind the screen with the ignition on, before and after starting the engine and nothing happened. Then I made another check under the seat, and the positive terminal was the slightest bit loose - but not enough for it to ever lose connection I would've thought, so I tightened that up (as I have a lightning tail now and a low seat, the terminals are in a prime location to be pushed when seated - but I'm sure I experienced the dash cutting out without sitting on it, and also, why would that only happen when cold, and also why didn't the whole bike cut out, and not just the dash?), and it didn't cut out today, both times I used it, so perhaps that was it. I'll see how it goes...

starting when cold, draws more amps & a lose connection increases resistance too

so it sounds quite plausible :yup:

Hmm. Is it odd that the dash cut out completely and then turns on again, just once after being on for a minute or so though? I woulda thought it would happen straight away and perhaps flicker or something.

ok look at it like this...
the starter circuit is like a fat greedy kid
it wants all the cake (electricity, in the battery)
& will push all the small weaker demands for cake
out of the way...they only get some once fatty has quaffed

:yup:

Yes, so why doesn't it cut out when I'm starting it, and only after a couple of minute, not when the fat greedy kid is eating muffins?

ok it's an electronic dash...
so i suspect is susceptible to low voltage , or even voltage spike?

if its working result :yup:

(sorry ,i missed the after a couple of minutes bit :old: )

Well, it's still happening now (battery cable isn't loose). Sometimes its just the backlight that disappears for a few seconds, and other times it's the whole screen that dies (It also says 'comms error' when coming back on). Still only after it's been turned on for a minute or so, and today the screen actually cut out again while I was riding down the road - It has no affect on the engine running though.

Perhaps I should just have a more thorough check of the wiring to the dash. Does anybody know which plug under the seat goes up to it?
