I was talking to a guy the other day who mentioned that the header bolts have a tendency to corrode then sheer off causing all sorts of problems. Has anyone had this happen? I'm guessing it would be best to change them and add copper slip but being imperial are they awkward to find.

I think the most common cause of broken header studs is incorrectly installed exhaust systems that are constantly causing the header bolts to be stressed. you need to make sure that the complete exhaust system is lined up so that all mountings sit correctly before any parts are tightened up.

Trouble is, if you do have one shear, it turns into a nightmare as you have to drill out the broken stud, which is really difficult as the stud is steel in an Ally head. The only way to do it properly is take the head to an engineering shop and have the stud spark erroded.

I am considering removing the studs (before they shear) installing steel Helicoil inserts (metric), then use a metric stud. Anyone got any thoughts on this approach.... :?:

Yeah I figured it would be a pain to drill out and the bolts are looking corroded but don't know what the best course of action is

Do the studs come out of the heads of the engine? If so can you get replacements and where from

Well tried one Of the front header nuts today while I was in the middle of the engine rotation and it was that corroded that the stud came out with it, which was nice. Only three more to go, I just hope I don't snap any in the process.

Well engine dropped, rear studs are fine so no need to change. Problem now is that one of the front studs has sheared off!!! It has about three threads sticking out of the head. Any suggestions as to the best way to remove it?
Another question as well ppl when I removed the pipes, there was a mesh thing came out with it, plz tell me that was only the gasket.

feckin' nuts on the studs on my bike are stuck solid, gotta get them cut off so i can get the exhaust off to have a clamp welded back on, think ill be using brass nuts when it goes back on, hopefully be easier to get off if i need to again.
