Hi all

For many months i've been having intermittent problems with my speedo on my xb9s.
Will work for, sometimes a week or 2 and then drops zero, then will work ok for a few days.
Suspected the speedo sensor, but at £70 ish I want to be sure.

I have checked the continuity of the white wire at the sensor plug, to the white wire at the speedo multi socket, this is open circuit.
I assuming this is the same wire it's indicating the wire is broken perhaps at the headstock.
Anybody had similar symptoms?

Any suggestions how to check the hall effect sensor?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Martin

I may be totally off the mark, BUT do you wait for your bike to run the full 'start up' sweep before firing it up?? I have been told that it may cause problems with the speedo if you fire it up immediately you turn the key. If you wait until the clocks have done their initial sweep, (4 or 5 seconds) then start it up, you should be fine..

If I am wrong then I am sure there will be loads of others ready to shoot me down in flames...... lOl

Hi Jill

Thanks for the reply.

Started the bike the same for the last 7 years of ownership.

I'm going to buy a new sensor and hope that it puts the problem right.

Thanks again

Martin

Is it not the speed sensor that Maz recommends connecting to the 5V (sensor) supply rather than the 12V supply?

Re-wire the sensors feed to the ECM regulated 5V ie. CPS red/white wire.

If the sensor is of the same age than the bike, try pulling and cleaning it first. Maybe some debris from the transmission is blocking it.

Hi
Just checked the voltage at the sensor plug, between red/white wire and black/white wire 5v.

Also read on badweatherbikers that the 9s is regulated to 5v, 9r was 12v.

All XB speedo sensors require a 5 volt power supply.

You're metering the wrong circuit......the above is the cam position wiring colours.

VSS has gray, black and white on the harness side and red, black and white on the sensor side

Hi Maz

Slight mistake on the colours.
The loom socket has red, black/w and white wires, I have 5v across the red and black/w. (triagular grey plug/socket)
Which is connected to the speed sensor on top of the crankcase above the front pulley.
Cheers
