I started on the Hand change lever last night.
Image
This was the basic idea.....

But it's obvious that there would not be enough clearance for the arc of movement if I did not modify the design slightly.
Image

So I introduced a slight dog leg to give a running clearance on the cover.

I used a felt tip pen to black up the plate and scribed the shape with dividers.
Then I bandsawed out a parallel section.
Image

Image

Then I milled it to the line, so as to give me something parallel to hold in the vice.
Image
I drilled out the pivot hole (which will eventually become a square).....
Image

Then continued drilling progressively smaller holes along the centreline of the lever.
Image

I made a bung in the lathe....
Image
And turned this to suit the gearbox spotface.
Image
This will be used as a gauge, when I form the true radius of the lever, to ensure that it does not foul the cover.
Image
Once I'd established the true clearance radius of the lever, I turned down the smaller diameter to suit my drilled hole in the lever.
Image
I'll leave this in place when I profile the radius on the linisher.

Image
That's as far as I got. 1.5 hours so far.

Gonna shy away from that as there's too many about.
What I'm looking for, is four brass balls, about 7/8 to 1 inch diameter. :yup:
And yes, I've checked the local monkeys. lOl
I'll thread the balls over a stud in the top of the lever, leaving the last one tapped blind.
Anyone got any brass balls? lOl lOl lOl

I think I've got a sprung saddle off a BSA M20 (I know  , stop laughing at the back lOl ) lurking in the shed 'somewhere' lOl
It might be useful to cut the top off to make a mould to lay up your own and then shove the little shock underneath :?:

You're welcome to it, if you want it.

I've already marked out a seat pan on a nice bit of 3mm stainless. I can't cut it out yet, as it was part of a machine I'm building. I've just got to persuade the customer that it's not required on the machine build. lOl lOl

There's not many true Ironmongers left to look at.
I can get them off Ebay in the States, but I'll poke around a bit more here first.
I'm calling in to Kempton Park (Autojumble) on the way up to Sproutfest, just in case there's a cheap girder available.

,,not brass mate, but balls from bearings that size wouldn't be a problem,,(not much good to yer though, as you'd have to spark errode a hole through 'em),,,there are many facinating and wonderful machined odds and ends scattered around work Mick, will have a scout around for yer mate 8-)

Cheers Ian. Whatever I use must be able to be tapped 6 or 8mm through. I thought about looking in antique shops, but I'm much too young for that. lOl

I think this looks classic but you could probably knock something like this up yourself.

OK, so seeing as I didn't have to take my annual bath for Sproutfest tonight, I consoled myself by staying on at work to do some more to the Gear change lever.
This is how it looked the other night.
Image

Before I could shape it, I needed to mill a slot that will act as the clamp, while I still had something to hold in the vice. The centreline between the two holes is not square to the vice, so it had to be rotated.
Image
Image
With that done, I could bandsaw out the profile.
Image
My bandsaw is a bit knackered, so you can't run to the line accurately, but it's good enough for roughing out.
Image
Once I'd cut it out, I put it back in the mill and machined the straight sections to the lines that I'd scribed.
Image
Image
I also milled the end square.
Image
Once that was done, I started to linish the internal radius.
Image
I've still got some more linishing to do, then I'll drill the cross hole for the clamp and drill and tap the end.
Image
3 Hours total so far.

All that bling and it's not even a FXTWATAIL.

Just some old Triumph :ner:

Mick - this annual bath thing. What does it entail?.
