Bungle,

I do not think we can judge the FS tensioner from T965m's unfortunate experience cos his belt looked well past it. Other evidence on belt reliability is mixed and inconclusive. So I am going for it.

I do not know if anyone else gets this but in the wet I end up with a hell of a lot of grit on the top of my rear mudguard. I have left all the belt guards in place on the Uly. I have a tail tidy mod but had grit on the guard before that and I never noted it on other bikes.

If this grit gets into the belt system that is not going to help things either.

I think the belt wear thing is a combination of many things and it is hard to pin point any single issue. One thing that is an issue is that HD state the belt as a lifetime part. I am a M&E Engineer and can tell you all right now that no such thing is possible.

60 years anyone :ffs: I should be so lucky, Ducky

Don't get me wrong, I've got one. I just don't care if it works or not 'cos it looks cool

Just picked the bike up from Edinburgh HDB, all bearings are ok and the belt has been replaced. Total cost £209, which was better than I expected. I hope this belt lasts longer than the first one ;)

Interesting thoughts of the many. seems like belts are breaking all over the place. Mine went ping a couple of weeks ago, just short of 10k. Yes i have a FS tensioner which Maz fitted at about 5k I think. Only issue i can identify is / was a slipping clutch at the time. I had done a"bump start" about 500 miles previous, dont think they like those ?

Dealer who sold it to me said G/T 50k miles " lifetime" guess what now? no such G/T exsists. Quote " we had to get that sorted" sounds like a lot of failures costing a lot od warrenty claims ??

Anyhow its of to the emporium for a new belt and 10k service. It'll be raining money in Duckinfield soon enough!

Bought a new drive belt for me 12S(13000 miles) the other day from an auth HD dealer,
cost me £134, which if ya think of it, if was a chain drive i'd be spending that sort of cash on chain and sprocket kit.
the orig belt had'nt broke but it's just peace of mind.

Stripped Bickkers bike today......reason the belt snapped was that the clutch basket needle race had welded itself solid.....he was very lucky that the belt snapped or he could be reading this from a hospital bed

....fuckin shite XB design short-cuts again

......tis quite a common fault, although they normally just fall apart rather than seize solid.
