Just checked the receipts and no mention of bearings, saying that I do expect to have to do some work in the near future. It's not like I spent a fortune.

There was a guy on FB UKBEG recently that posted he was off on a trip. A few days later he was asking what the noise coming from the bike could be...

Turned out he had shit the rear wheel bearings. Lost a day or 2 from his trip and the bill from the random bike shop in Switzerland was about 500 chf (£400)... Bearings are about £40 or £50 I think.

If you scan the old posts on this forum about uly and other XBs you'll find threads of bearings being found to be on their way out, when changed at 10k...

Like you say, you got a good deal so there should be money in the biscuit tin for essentials... 17k miles warrants the essentials. Take it to the emporium, he is faster than others and cheaper hourly rate too

Take the advice given and you will be happy you did. I changed all wheel bearings and belt tensioner ones [SKF] and fitted the free spirits tensioner also the MAZ nipple [ahemm] I also took the trouble to change the wheel spacers for mind sake they can get crushed,
