Has anyone had a AST shock break in two like the early std shock used to I think near the rear mount . Reason I ask is mine let go big time. 5yrs old 29,000 miles. Frightening when you can see what is holding the rear of your bikes up.

OF had his go on his race bike but apparently that was an internal design fault that was ironed out. I know of a few who have noticed cracked eyes on the swingarm end & had them changed before anything catastrophic happened. Pash had his serviced when I had mine serviced, mine was fine (10000miles) his was cracked, I don't know what sort of mileage his bike had done.

I hope you're OK and apart from a twitchy ring nothing else happened.

I have been in communication with Wilbers (German shock builder) who make a linkage that converts to a conventional shock. When I asked about the link rod stresses, they couldn't actually answer me! Having said that, the link rod is a basic design that would be easy enough to monitor and repair yourself rather than needing the shock rebuilding........ my AST is going on eBay to be replaced by a Wilbers

What's the cost of a Wilbers as compared to the AST?

If you're using an AST with a Metmachex swingarm, the swingarm mounting will need modifying.
This could also apply to other after market swingers.

03 has been warning us about ASTs for many many years.
