Hi team. About to get bits in for oil change before the winter sit. Would normally buy K&N oil filter but have just read something saying the flow is not high enough :o and go HighFlow?? Then found a piece saying HighFlow are no good and Stick with Rotax. I also stumbled across the K&P Engineering S27 which looks impressive but quite pricey http://kandpengineering.com/product-catalog/s27/

Any advice here much appreciated. What would :maz: do for the 1125 or 1190?

K

Why choose anything other than standard for an oil filter? You may have a reason...

Thanks Pash. I have always just gone for K&N filters if available, was always told they are superior. I will go with the Rotax option... or Aprilia AP0956745. Many thanks for the reply.

Might want to wait for more replies from people that actually own 1125s (I don't)...

I always use HD filters on my Buells (and Honda ones on my Hondas)...

Hi Kiwi,

I have K and N on mine with no complaints. Have you got the link to the piece you read on it not being up to scratch?.

Hey Ymale. There is so much mixed info out there and very little backed by any research (that was why I had to ask the group for advice) ...but the bit I found against K&N was small http://ebrforum.com/showthread.php?858-Oil-Filter and after a little more digging it seems the negative is a creation from the stealer to secure their sales in the parts dept. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php?topic=18232.0

Was difficult to decide but I think I will source a Rotax filter. Saying that, there was also a guy who bought a heap of filters and opened them all up, concluding they are all cheap crap. That's where the fine looking S27 steps in again http://kandpengineering.com/product-catalog/s27/

Maybe next time.

The guy that opened up the filters:

Good read BB thanks for posting that, very interesting, especially that SS filter at 30 microns vs 90 on the paper... that's gunna effect flow.

Some thoughts
You have made 2 significant changes to the oiling system of that engine

1. 30 micron permanent filter
Changing the filtration from 90 to 30 ( if the standard paper filter is 90 micron ) would effect the pressure drop and the flow rate across the filter,

This seems to match up with the partially collapsed filter you posted pics above, the pump created suction on it,

That indicates greater demand for oil flow than the filter can provide.

How would the flow rate be affected? Oil going in has to go out, otherwise the filter would burst.

Depends where the relief valve is and whether the filter has a by-pass valve :)
