When I stop after a run, there is a gap of 4mm between the inner edge of the belt and the rear pulley flange. If I then push the bike backwards, the gap closes up until the belt is snug against the flange.

Should I be concerned about this? A Free Spirit tensioner has been fitted, if that makes any difference.

Check one the How To that all the washers are in the right place...

I've actually done away with the washers and taken a file to the fork. You will find a post showing what I did with some judicious searching...

yes it would be nice if the belt was up against the flange, I would be more concerned if the belt was running off the outside edge of the teeth .

Thank you very much for that; very helpful. The belt on it is the latest version, and it fills the pulley, so it is running off the outside edge of the teeth, by about 4mm....

Wheel bearings fooked? Swing arm bearings fooked?

Thanks Pash; you obviously know what you're talking about. A little more info:

It's a 22,000 mile bike with the three-bearing rear wheel, so I would hope that would be OK. Couldn't say about the swinging arm bearings, though, but it's been serviced every 5.000, and there were no advisories, or fail & retest, for the new MoT (150 miles ago); I'd have thought any looseness in the swinging arm or wheel bearings would have been spotted. There were no advisories about wheel or swinging arm bearings at the 20K service from the dealer either.

The Free Spirit tensioner went on from new in 2009, and its (broken) spring was replaced at 19500 miles. The belt (now a G0500.1AKF) was replaced 15800 miles, and the belt pulley bearing and rear sprocket/pulley were replaced at 17000 miles.

I asked the same question about belt position on the Buellxb forum, and the answer was that the belt may move outwards that amount, from snug against the flange, when pushing the bike backwards. Mine is the opposite...

I've got the link to your May 2009 topic on FS tensioner fitting; I'll take a look on the bike in due course.

I'll get there in the end... :headbang:

Not that I know much about this stuff but the rule of thumb with an XB is bearings every tyre change. As it's a big XB, maybe it's the same?

15k on the same bearings on a Buell seems a big ask... :coat:

Either the belt is damaged or the tensioner pivots are worn or the tensioner isn't fitted properly or most commonly the front sprocket teeth are excessively worn.

Thanks Maz. If the rear sprocket was worn enough to need replacing at 17000 miles, and the tensioner bearings were replaced at the same time, I can see that the front pulley might well be well pasts its best by now. What is its average working life anyway?

Can you supply a new one (and the nut), or should I just get one from my local main stealer?

The Free Spirit tensioner was incorrectly installed, as it turned out.

I Followed your instructions, Pash, would not have attempted the job without, I had to change the pulley bearings while I was at it, never got a chance to take the bike for a ride but noticed the belt was not completely aligned. Won't get a chance to check out the problem until the weekend.

Just a followup to my situation with the belt being 2 mm short of the edge of the pully. I had followed Pash's instructions for the free spirits installation - would not have dared otherwise.
I just replaced the original belt a SPC falcon with the latest OEM to have the old one as a spare. The OEM fits perfectly.

By original belt in my previous post i meant the original belt on the bike when I bought it.
