If I fit a SatNag to the X1 will it be too much for the alternator and battery?

We're off to the Bol D'Or and I'm toying with getting a SatNag this weekend for the trip. I've been doing some research and not much leaps out that is good at sub £300, which I think is a lot of dosh  Any pointers?

I fitted a USB port charger thingie which worked for a while but now seems to have wrapped it's leg in ;) It's fused and direct to the battery.

And sits back to wait for the onslaught :D

Man up and spend some proper money lOl You're budgeting for about what you will spend on tyres on your track bike for a couple of days out. Double it and you could get a Garmin Zumo 660 with Touratech mount so you won't lose it. I've been running one for the past few years on a variety of bikes and although I don't understand electrickery I would say that the current drain is minimal.

Speak to Beef if you need any guidance in route plotting and downloading lOl

Steve

Spent too much lately so feeling the pain :o Not sure I want to lash out on a satnag as I've got Tom Tom on the phone which is pretty good. Just can't get the USB charger lead to work.

I'll just have to make sure I've got a written route card and a map plus don't lose the group. Old school :D

The only thing to be careful with Clive is that USB sockets can drain your battery if connected direct (been there and did that on the BMW ) so connect it via a switch or at least use a switched supply ( on my X1 my satnav gets power from the sidelight feed ) A lot of those sockets draw power all the time even when nothing is plugged into them , I think it's because they are trying to draw the 12v supply down to the usb 5v so eventually drag the battery down to that voltage. The BMW was ok like that when used every day on holiday but flattened the battery when left parked up for a week or two.

:yt: PITA. I reckon on a fortnight too. I'm considering going back to an old school fag lighter socket on mine.

I've put a male plug on mine that's compatible with the Optimate type 'pig tails'.

(I think they're Tamiya plugs that you can buy in model shops etc if you want to make your own ;) )

I have fallen for the beauty of maps again after Mushroom showed how great they are... Buy a road atlas and pull the pages out then swallow the route stopping and checking if need be at fuel stops...

Put the fun back into biking 8-)

I've got a USB socket on the handlebar conected to the speedo so it comes on with the ignition.
If you go to Nippy Normans on line you can get the socket and a waterproof housing for you phone for less than £100 mine is on a Ram mount and is very solid.

I like Adam's idea about using the Optimate socket. Just ordered a couple of sets. Just need to figure out which way they need wiring - should be able to tell from the female already installed shouldn't I?

Not sure what the 've' means but I'm guessing 'live'. Cheers, Pash :yup:
