So, yesterday, mushroom and I went to the Emporium on our X1s. Mushroom had done a great job of anti-satnav using pages from a road atlas which he stored in his top pocket.

We met up just east of Monmouth on the A40 for breakfast then headed through Hereford, Leominster, Shrewsbury, Newcastle-u-L, Congleton, Wilmslow then copping out of urban traffic lights and picking up the M60 to MazTown.

Anyway, we filled up just before Hereford then again in Newcastle, then in Shrewsbury on the way home.

Interestingly mushroom consistently needed around 33% more fuel than me. Mine did 65mpg first fill (up to 90 on A roads) and 59mpg second fill (half on motorway).

Obviously the 'I don't care about mpg' brigade will be sharpening their keyboard fingers, but my point is that for a well performing bike, the higher the mpg the better set up it is, so that means front cylinder map, ignition timing etc.

My X1 ('sister of Muffin' or as Kevmean may now call it 'ginger haired step sister of Muffin') is stock apart from:
* Buell pro race exhaust
* Forcewinder
* U.S. Gearing
* 0.9mm skimmed off the heads
* 1st oversize on the rear pot (it was scored when I got it)

It would be interesting to see what can make such a difference in mpg between two bikes...

Anyone else got X1 mpg figures for spirited A road riding?

or rider :idea:
Now F1 cars have a limited amount of fuel on board on some circuits they have to lift and coast to save fuel to make it to the finish line, have seen a difference between drivers of same team.
So would be interesting if you swopped bikes and then did a Fuel usage test again

I was behind him all the way, not draughting but it was probably worse for me cos following normally means having to accelerate harder when the leader takes off...

It was actually heavier cos that paint wasn't supposed to be there. Almost back to fighting weight now...

I always remember it as being around 55mpg. But on my recent trip i did a brim to brim check and had 67mpg, riding through the cotswolds, admittedly not doing much over 65 as my father in law was on his new thruxton, still running it in, but was surprised/impressed.

I've always been very impressed with the mpg of my S1 compared with other bikes I have or had. I get 60mpg consistently. I have an older Guzzi with 20 or 30 less horsepower that gets 45 on a good day. Mates of mine have newer bikes around 100 horsepower that get about 45 per gallon, not going any faster though. For an old fashioned engine the Buell seems very efficient. Single carb, long stroke, low revving, does that mean Harleys get even more mpg?
