Probably a very silly question, articles I've read seem to point to there being a 97 M2, followed by a 97/98 M2. If this is the case, what were the differences and how was it reflected in the vin number? Thanks

Don't recall the differences off hand but someone with a better tailored anorak will be along soon lOl

97 model would have had a V in the VIN No (ie immediately before the last seven digits) and a 98 model would have had a W.

Thanks Steve,
Definitely a 97 and a early one (in the 170s, anyone got a earlier one?.).
Have read a couple of articles lately that seem to point to a 97 model and a 97/98 this got me thinking - when the M2 was up at the emporium being fettled, Maz did not relocate the oil line due to my engine having a different bottom end case to normal. Wondered why and whether there were other differences to uncover.

Brake calipers and master cylinders will have changed.

According to my 1997-1998 Service Manual, the 'changes' for '98 were:
Front Master Cylinder internals
Front Caliper and Rotor (and Banjo Bolt)
Rear Caliper and Rotor
Rear Brake Master Cylinder and Reservoir
Silencer Rear 'Z' Bracket
Oil Pump
Voltage Regulator Wiring
Main Wiring Harness

Thanks gents,
In my ignorance, I had always assumed that the 97 & 98 were one model. I have received enlightenment. Thanks again
