This topic is intended to be a suppository ( ) for details of what it's actually like to own and run a Buell. It will form an easy reference tool for both existing and prospective Buell owners. You don't have to be an ace wordsmith to contribute, just the briefest information will do. For example: XB9/12 - bought new 01-01-04, mileage to date 40,000, official dealer/independent specialist/self serviced, no major problems/or loads of problems, wheel bearings replaced on average every 5,000 miles, steering head bearings replaced every 10,000 miles. Now on its 2nd drive belt, updated oil pump drive fitted at 00000 miles .....you get the idea.... |

2001 X1 purchased @ 9 months old, serviced by me until last year currenty shows approx 14.000 miles has done about 16-17 as speedo sensor failed two batteries in this time along with rectifier. Original bearings and belt drive, all well until this year when poor running caused little use. After being ripped off by an unknowledgable con shop the bike was given to Maz who promptly and affordably repaired the problem. fitted with Maz niple mod, free breathing system. Only other consumables to date are three rear tyres, two front, one set of front breakshoes. Has under gone a few cosmetic modifications. |

Here is a pic of my little Buell. Whats the big deal with the wheel bearings ? Mine were checked when I had wheels powder coated and they were fine so I didn't replace them as I had planed.

People over tighten the spindles and nip the bearings, when fitting a wheel there is a torque setting for the spindle most people don't realise. I didn't! |

2007 XB12X with luggage: 14,800, purchased at 3 yrs old when allegedly just had full 10k service ( by non-HD mechanic ). Fitted Albert can, K&N, lowered 45mm with shorter wilbers 631 shock, white wire mod, race ECU. Minor service & checked over by Tubbs on ocasions. no failures to date, although lh indicator occasionally decides its too tired to function. 2002 X1: 10,500, purchased 2013 when reported to have full 10k service from NHVT, Wiley Co can and round pan filter of unknown brand. Fitted clutchlite XXl, and bar-end weights. reset button for tacho replaced, has shaken gear lever off requiring new bushes ( wasnt the correct inner bush in the first place - hence failure ), starter clutch failed. 1997 S3T: 37,500km purchased in 2012 from previous owner for 12 yrs; V&H SST2 can plus gutted original ( which also fits the X1 for ITV tests ), milled footrests. 2 oil changes and pump drive gear checked - unworn. replaced faulty sidestand switch, battery died, starter motor brushes burnt out when old battery wasnt cranking properly. left pannier latch broken ( and unobtainable ). occasionally start button decides its got better things to do than sending electrickery to the starter. all in all, they have a pretty easy life with me, but so far have not let me down too expensively. |
