MTC in Reading (grubby) manned the job. Almost a ride in/ride out. Done in moments and all fixed with two new studs and nuts. Drilled in situ. Very pleased. Great service from a top lad

Got the bike back today. New tyre . Rode the bike home and it felt great.

I can't seem to get over 110mph. Is that unusual for a uly?

I did my X1 exhaust header gaskets yesterday, theyve been leaking for at least the past two thousand miles.
wow what an improvement to the bike!
Pick up from low revs is brilliant.
Some notes though that I had not found easily in any forum.
I bought new gaskets off ebay told they fit every harley engine ever built. they were flat round brillo pad type things. very tricky to fit without having them turn into a bunch of silvery fluff.
but having got the whole lot together it was still leaking worse than before.
A trip to Warrs sorted me out with the proper parts.
The harley parts PN 17040-98 have a conical cross section and are loaded with something looks like graphite.
Very fiddly to fit with out having them collapse. there is a tool you can buy or make.
I got mine in after cleaning the ports very thoroughly with sandpaper and a scraper. I burnished the edges of the gasket to form a tapered edge so they went into the holes easier. then carefully burnished them into the ports to regain the taper that I ruined while pressing them in.

I thought i was well prepared, i had a stud extractor (wouldnt fit into the space, but lucky the old studs came out easy) new studs and nuts, gaskets (wrong type)
Before i do this again ill have a pressing in tool, the proper gaskets and experience.

Jim's do a pressing tool. They are fiddly, I asked Maz about it years ago and he says he never has problems so I persevered. My tip is to clean the recess like you did, but with my Dremel and brass action man chimney brush (see my Brembo thread) then apply copa slip to the mating surfaces (I have had trouble getting the buggers out before, even when they are tufts of steel wool. Then with the surfaces 'lubricated', push them in square, or if not, little by little keeping them square.

I would use k nuts on the exhaust studs with plenty of copa slip again, and not tighten them excessively cos you will end up crushing the taper in the gasket and ending up with a smaller hole for the gas to flow through...
