NGK 7 will damage your engine it's way too hot......NGK are aware that their catalogue listing is incorrect.

I use NGK simply because my nearest HD outlet that I'm prepared to spend money with is 80 miles away. The correct heat grade for a NGK plug is 9 NOT the 7.

new plugs fitted, but it still has a random cough. So I wonder, should I apply a Mikuni HSR42 or is there some wonder, bleedin obvious cure I'm overlooking.

All filters appear clear, HT leads seem sound.

Is there a common cause of random misfire on these bikes I might explore?

As mentioned before, I'd have a look at your intake manifold rubbers, to check for perishing.
