You mean the little RHS scoop that comes fitted as standard??? Why? What does that do?

Right hand side ?
Now is that nearside or offside :old:

How many miles on the bike and what mods done to it.

11,500 miles, standard 2006 build year except for 2007 airbox. No engine or exhaust mods. The fan has always run a lot ever since I have had the bike and runs almost continually in warm weather, and most of the time through the winter too. I did fit the 2007 plastic filler plates that fit under the seat, but they seem to make the situation worse as far as seat heat is concerned.

IMO the "offside" scoop cover keeps heat in and around the injectors for a cold weather situation. Removed it alows air scooped by the "nearside" to blow more freely across the engine and out the "offside".
I tested the theory last year with just jeans on (the legs  ) and it works.

I recall reading that the right hand air scoop is designed to cool the fuel lines to prevent vaporisation.

Dear God.

I think the Gold Wing comes with air con, doesn't it? Sounds like your kind of bike.

It's not me I'm bothered about it's the damage to the bike. First damper replaced under warranty after seals went. When the fan blows hot air on it continuously on a long ride it gets incredibly hot. No longer under warranty.

I have an STT, and until this week (where temps have gone up) the fan only ever came on if I was doing a lot of sitting still at traffic lights, or after I turned the bike off.

This week the fan has been running while I sit at 70 on the motorway which should provide a fair bit of air to the bike (which runs around 4,000) at that speed in top gear.
Then again, I had sweat running down my neck from my helmet, so it was hot.

Thank god for removable helmet liners.

But I've digressed. The behaviour you've described seems aytpical. Maybe something is wrong?

Only Erik could put an air cooled engine INSIDE a fuel tank

06 Uly, 10K miles, Remus can, K&N air filter and a R/H FS scoop. Plus a couple of other mods.

15 mile run through solid London traffic and a couple of 100mph blasts and it was about 28C.

The fan only comes on after I turn the bike off (not for long though) and I get no hot arse or legs.

Or is it just my bike?

My STT fan only comes on generally when I stop or if I'm caught up in town traffic for a long period and it's only covered 1200 miles so I would expect it to be still "tight"
