I use the normal 95 stuff.

Mine does not like the higher octane stuff.
Anything above 95 and she will run like crap! Cutting out, misfiring and running very hot especially with 99 or 100 octane.

Timing is fine, new plugs, tps reset all done so why?

Also she does not like Shell of any kind. And seems to run best with BP or Esso.

How could anyone hate someone from Historic Basingstoke, who uses the Family Guy in a thong for an avatar?!?

OK, the owner's manual for my XB12Ss says to use 91 or higher octane. Kinda like Maz with sparkplugs: if it's what they say to use, then use it. If super-high floats your boat, then by all means go with it. Over here, I have no choice: the pumps offer 87, 89 and 93 octane. Period.

Funny you should mention that (and seems to have been overlooked here) but modern fuel does get bored and go off if left too long..... :?

I often have to drain the float bowl on my Jap spec SRX400 if left more than a couple of weeks or she's a pig to start. ;) Not suggesting you drain the XB's tank or anything, but food for thought? :?

Carbs are open to the atmosphere, injection systems are not.

A carb relies on atmospheric pressure to push fuel through jets when a partial vaccum is created else where. When they arn't in use for a while the fuel can vapour off leaving behind additives.
Some later designs tried to prevent this leak to atmos when not running but it still would happen given long enough.
Good old taps allowed us to run the engine untill it starved from empty carbs. Modern vac taps make this hard work so nobody bothered till next spring and then they'ed run like shite.
Fuel in injector lines can not vapour off the same but could still go off some in the tank though.
The joys of motorcycling :)
