Ash, there's all sorts of articles on line about galvanic corrosion and sacrificial anodes - which the ally may become lOl I've seen threads rotted out on an old Brit bike that was left for years in a warm, moist garage. Make of this what you will.

Some years ago, I built a kit aircraft and when it underwent an inspection by the PFA for one of the stages in the build, I asked the Inspector if I could substitute some stainless fasteners for some ordinary steel ones that were quoted in the build spec. He looked at me with surprise :D . Another example is the failure of bolts on cliffs that (some  ) climbers use for protection. When stainless bolts are used - even a few miles from the sea :o , the BMC declared them as 'bombs with a short fuse'. They have been known to fail in as little as 18 months. One piece, glued in bolts are the only type recommended for these applications.

The only time I use them is with lashings of Coppaslip, which also reduces their nasty tendency to gall up without warning.

These are only my personal views, some people with a deeper understanding of chemistry may well prove me wrong :D

But that won't work retroactively. If they already look shite, I'm not sure what you could use to clean them up first.
