I've only done about 500 miles and I feel I'm still trying to get used to the handling. Do they generally need a lot of counter steer to get them over and to keep them there?

Last bikes were a Ducati monster and a R1150GS, both handled pretty well, the GS seeming not to need any real effort or thought.

I still have the original WP shock, it seems well made, should I be worried of a collapse? :o How many genuine cases have there been?

cheers
Griff

I think it should have been recalled at least a few times and have a Showa fitted?
I'm sure someone who actually knows what they're on about will be along soon........
You might even be inline for a free 'safety' recall at your local HD dealers, I had my 98 S1 rear shock replaced last year :-)

I had a BMW too at the time that I did my first test-ride on a Buell ('97 S1) and although that was a truck-sized R1100RT it handled lightyears better than the Buell. It wasn't half as enjoyable though and I knew instantly I wanted one, despite nearly crashing it in one of my favourite corners that I never noticed to have any bumps before :D

Later tubers handle a lot better already, and I don't think it's just the shock?

S-1 has pritty ropey suspension tbh. I have gotten used to it over the years but was amazed at the difference when I tried an XB and went down the M271 towards DG. What was usually a teeth rattling affair felt smooth. Get an AST and have the shocks sorted by Maxton or replaced with X-1 forks If you have the money. Couple of peopl ehave gone yap on the front too.

S1 a woeful handling beast at the best of times compared with Japanese or European.....I spent lots of money and time attempting to improve it, best results IMO are Maxton or Traxxion Dynamics modified X1 Showa forks with an AST rear....although this still leaves you with crap brakes.....best all round was a conversion to a revalved and resprung Gixxer front end using the 04 model 4 pot ceramic piston Tokico radial calipers gripping GSXR or SV discs....excellent and reasonably inexpensive to do, brakes are outstanding but you do lose a couple of degrees of steering lock. The S1 speedo is front wheel driven so that needs a different solution also.

This pic from last Autumn shows the various mods......just before it got taken apart to embody another idea.....must get round to powder coating everything etc etc etc...

Buy a Ducati the easiest and probably cheapest answer!

........... I always thought that the S1 handled well, and especially the standard front end. Twitchy. Guess I will never make a bike tester, coz.

I like the way the XB SS, Uly & STT handle but never thought them a lot better than my S1 with AST & standard front end. Have always figured that the standard S1 swinging arm was the weakest point of its handling.

Yoffie once told me you had to ride a S1 on the pegs - never found out what exactly he meant. Presumed he meant using weight on the foot pegs rather than bars. I have tried it but not got it working for me.

Am I wrong :?:

Sort of......the swingarm is shite and so are the forks.
