Did the regularity of the 'ticks' change when you revved the engine? Could it have been the exhaust pipe joint leaking a bit until it expanded with heat and sealed itself?
Hold a screwdriver handle to your ear and place the business end on the motor in several places to try and get a better idea as to where the noise is coming from.

yes theres pleanty of oil in it,the noise does increase when revved so sounds like the tappets,i dont understand why the noise should come and go ?,it is due for an oil change,il do that nxt week.

At the risk of getting shot down in flames........

Did the noise happen when you started the engine hot?
If so it may have picked up on a valve guide (I had this happen on a 1200 sportster engine)

The ticking is the guide moving.

If your oil light comes on, it sounds like a pump problem...

Hi i would`nt run it again until you`ve investigated the oil light coming on..does`nt sound like its oil pressure switch failure as you stated that the noise came back then oil light came on..would go the route of checking out oil pump first....good luck with it, alls not lost... :yup:

Ive drained the oil and had a look at the oil pump, all clean and looks like new, does the pump have to be bled somehow, when i fill up with new oil ? someone told me that the pressure release valve can stick so should be taken out and polished, where is it ? i took out the switch behind the filter all clean in there, thanks for replies, any more ideas would be very welcome

Pressure relief valve :?: :? I think someone may have been spinning you one ;)

IIRC, there was some talk about this valve sticking on the 'Blockhead' big twin, but those motors are very different.

well i bought it with 13,500 miles on, it and a full 10,000 mile service history, ive only done around 200 on it,as the oil looked clean and the right level i sorted other bits first, and was about to change the oil, so i dont know what was in it,i was going to put 20/50 hd oil in.
