Neanderthals, most probably.
Judging by the bike's quality they managed to skip Cro Mangnon and Homo Sapiens successfully.

Rumours say, his ancestors are from France, former "du Bois" and the pegasus shall be part of their heraldic whatever. The du Bois moved to England in the 16th century and further on to America in the 17th century.

I always thought it was a Dutch/Flemish maybe eastern France sort of name.

This lot and these people seem to think it's German.

The spelling might not always have been Buell. Bowell is a similar Welsh equivalent, for instance, or Beville or, as Gunter suggests, du Bois etc The German connection is explored here (the same as one of TtT's links), which gives, as alternatives, "Bewer, Bewere, Bewerre... and many more".

The Michigan Buells in the American Civil War was quite a fun read. I wonder which of those is Erik's Daddy?
