The spelling might not always have been Buell. Bowell is a similar Welsh equivalent, for instance, or Beville or, as Gunter suggests, du Bois etc The German connection is explored here (the same as one of TtT's links), which gives, as alternatives, "Bewer, Bewere, Bewerre... and many more".

The Michigan Buells in the American Civil War was quite a fun read. I wonder which of those is Erik's Daddy?
