hey guys

my xb12r was stolen a few weeks back but quickly recovered by the police a few days later. After recovery and assessment the insurance company has decided to write off the vehicle.

It is insured to a value of £5k the repair cost is £4.7k and the insurance have offered me £4k. As i've not made an insurance claim before i was wondering if i could draw on your experience as to whether or not i should accept this offer from the insurance company?

Also they have asked if i want to salvage the vehicle at 15% of the insurance amount (approx £600), there is no structural damage except on the frame - mostly cosmetic - the thieves had sanded the VIN number off the frame and damaged the frame when they forced the steering lock - the investigators have recommended replacing the frame.
Is it going to be worth salavaging the bike as i would have to pay for breaking it into parts to be done by someone else? Engine's in pretty good nick 4K miles in 5 years and serviced at the Emporium for the last 3yrs so just about run in, brand new tyres, MOT etc...
Any advice regards this would be great.

thanks again
aks

Quibble with them re the offer of £4000 provide evidence of what they are going for on Ebay etc. You are lucky as all the foriegn buyers arepushing up the XB prices but whatever you do get the salvage back as there is a lot of cash sat their waiting to be broken up. As GM said the motor will get you what you have paid for the wreck wheels with tyres got to be worth £250 as well.

I dunno about bike insurance but when I've had the misfortune to deal with taxi insurance companies, they often just try it on with their first offer, and sometimes with the second one too... After that maybe they decide you're not going away that easily and come up with something a bit more reasonable...

Sounds like that bike has very low mileage for its age, and no doubt you have receipts showing the servicing and other expenditures, so point all that out to the insurance as you demand a higher offer...

Saying all that, I don't know what the market value is, but I'd take a guess that any insurance company's first offer is gonna be something that suits them, not you, especially if there isn't a 3rd party involved that they can claim the money off...

Definitely don't accept the first offer (was offered 2K under market value for a BM I wrote off back in 2005) but as daywalker says, support your refusal with eBay, Autotrader, MCN prices etc, They WILL cave, they're just looking to save money their end.
Stand firm.
Salvage is always worth it if you have the time to advertise/send etc.

Also, if the polis have a body for court after the recovery, you can ask them to make a compensation order request on your behalf, Worth a punt.

even if they never pay it, this will apply a bit more grief on the scrote, coz the system wont forget about it.
