Don, is there a memorial to your grandfather and his crew in the UK?

If not and you have all their details etc. we'd like to have something made and placed in the LAHC's Bomber Command garden of remembrance. This could all be done in plenty of time for Em's Day on the 29th May.

If you can't attend Em's Day we'll take some pictures of the memorial and dedication.

We're going to go ahead with a memorial to Don's grandfather and his crew :worthy: :worthy: . This will be placed in the LAHC Bomber Command garden of remembrance and dedicated at sometime during Em's Day.

83 Squadron history: http://www.raf.mod.uk/history/bombercom ... uadron.cfm

RAF Wyton, Cambridgeshire: http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafbramptonwyton/ ... ection.cfm

We'll arrange a visit to RAF Wyton sometime this year, details TBC.

I too felt moved when I read about Don's grandfather and his crew. I did some research and together with some additional details from Don, I've managed to put together the story of what happened to Lancaster B.111, JB284, OL-C, on the 23rd November 1943.

A total of 764 aircraft took part in that mission, including 10 Lancasters (630 Squadron) from East Kirkby. 2 failed to return to East Kirkby.

Bomber Command aircrew losses in WW2 were staggering, 55,573 were killed and all of them were volunteers :worthy:....

The futility of war saddens me at times, with the vast numbers lost
The battle of the Somme :headbang:
" Britain's first-day casualties, a staggering 19,240 died."
by the end
" In all, for the six miles that British soldiers advanced, they lost more than 400,000 while in all the battle saw 1.3 million casualties."
