I am concerned that it runs very hot. So hot in fact that it was burning the leg of my son when he sat in front of me as we idled around the block. Traffic is heavy here so idling is something we have to live with. It also so seems a bit flat on power if you wind the throttle quickly from idle. It is fine when doing more than 2000rpms but flat until there. Your help would be most appreciated as mechanics aren't the best.

Hey, Duncan, and welcome. 8-)

Hot is something that they do. Was the fan on, as there's been a couple of failures which wouldn't help in those conditions. A right-hand air scoop is available but might not help much if you aren't moving very fast anyway.

Best solution on your flat spot would be, without meaning to sound frivolous, to keep it over 2krpm. Especially if you are going to wind the throttle on quickly, the electrickery wasn't designed to handle that sort of thing, I don't think.
