I thought I should introduce myself. I've been driving cars for over 30 years & passed my IAM test about 15 years ago, then took a fast road course. For the past 2 years, wifey & I have been thinking about learning to ride - my wife doesn't drive. Each time the conversation popped up, we would discuss it for weeks, before eventually dropping the idea - mostly because of our perception of the dangers. But, there was never really a bike that popped my cork - so to speak. During the TT earlier this year, we went to the Peel TT day to look around & get an ice cream - like you do. Walking along the harbour, I saw the most fantastic bike I'd ever seen (I may have dribbled on it, sorry) & over the next week or so, I searched the Net to find out what it was. Eventually I found it, a Buell XB12SX in orange & black with orange wheels.

So, three months later, we have our own Honda CG125 & I have my CBT booked for Friday. Wifey's CBT will be in a couple of weeks.

What's the average number of lessons people need to pass the test?

Not sure about how many lessons these days as its been along time since i passed my test

Good luck with the test 34 years since I passed my test; I had to borrow a Bantam to take it on because the 500 Matchless I'd been riding illegally for the previous 2 years was too big (My Dad beat the shit out of me when he found out and made me sell it - which in fact left me with enough money to buy an A10 )

Remember, the tester isn't looking for perfection, just someone who isn't going to endanger themselves or others. That comes later

I know, I saw the bikes parked up in Port Erin near the hotel.

You could do the 'direct access' course like I did, which was over 4 full days with test at the end. Costly (about £750), but gets you on bikes over 500cc straight away.

Depends on how impatient you are to ride....... (of course, I'm not impatient at all, just female!!)

I thought of taking that sort of intensive training & may still do it.

I'm not sure the Direct Access thing applies to me?

Is that because you are based in the Isle of Man? Do you have different driving laws?
Or have I got that wrong...

Things are slightly different here, but I thought Direct Access was for under 21's? Maybe not - I'm a noob.

Direct Access is only for the over 21s.

Good luck with the bike thing. The thing they might not tell you doing bike training is that you need to become psychic. And beware of anyone who wears a hat, whilst driving - especially anything of a trilby stylee or with feathers in it. Expect drivers to do the most stupid thing and you should be OK. Oh and check your mirrors for bikes over taking you just as you start to over take.
